We invite you to take part in a study conducted by INRIA (National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology) and LAPCOS (Clinical, Cognitive and Social Anthropology and Psychology Laboratory) - University Côte d’Azur, Nice, France

Purpose of the Study

This study aims to explore the impact of AI, its uses, and how users perceive and judge it.

Outcomes of the Study

Your participation will help improve the design and configuration of AI systems for better usage and greater transparency.

Your Participation

If you agree to take part, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire, which will take approximately 15 minutes. You will also be asked to rate your level of confidence for each question. In addition, you will also be asked to answer questions such as your level of confidence in AI, your age, gender, education level and type of degree, as well as your field of study.

Participation Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be fluent in English and have it as your primary language.

Your Right to Withdraw from the Study at Any Time

Your participation in this research is entirely voluntary. You may stop participating in the questionnaire at any time, without having to provide any justification, and your decision to refuse or discontinue participation will have no consequences.

Your Right to Privacy and Data Confidentiality

This research strictly complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You may withdraw from the study at any time during your participation.

Your data will be collected anonymously. As a result, in accordance with data protection regulations, you will not be able to access, modify, or delete it. The data will be archived for 15 years and stored on an encrypted, password-protected hard drive.

Additionally, the collected data, as well as the experimental materials used, will be deposited on the Open Science Framework (OSF) platform, in accordance with open science principles.

For more information about your rights, you can visit the website cnil.fr.

Data collected

We collect the following data:

  • Device type (PC, tablet, …)
  • Operating System (iOS, macOS, Android, …)
  • Browser used (Chrome, Firefox, …)
  • Screen width and height in pixels
  • The type of experimentation randomly assigned to you
  • The AI's response
  • Your response to each question
  • Your response time to each question
  • The confidence level you indicated
  • Each key you typed and the timestamp of the action

We also anonymously collect all your responses to questionnaires that help us get to know you better (age range, your knowledge, confidence, and frequency of use of AI, your gender, your nationality, the country where you have lived the longest, and your level of education).

To prevent automated responses made by robots or AI, we use Google's reCAPTCHA. This service may collect personal information, like all Google services. However, we never have access to this information and have no way to correlate it with your responses. If you are not comfortable with the use of reCAPTCHA, we recommend that you do not participate in this experiment.

Publication of Results

The publication of data in publications and public databases will be completely anonymous. The study results will be presented at conferences and published in scientific journals.

⏱️Duration: ~15 minutes

You will be asked a series of 21 general knowledge questions — with a twist!.

For each question:

  1. You will start writing your own freeform answer based on your understanding
  2. As you type, an AI agent (copilot) may provide automated suggestions to help you complete your response. To receive more relevant suggestions, we recommend writing complete and well-structured answers.
  • ✔️ Press TAB (⇥) to accept a suggestion
  • ❌ Or simply ignore it and continue typing

💬 You are not required to follow the AI agent suggestion. Use it as you normally would.

💡 Please answer using only your own knowledge and the information from the built-in AI agent.

Do not consult any external sources (e.g., websites, search engines, or other people).

At the end of each question, you’ll be asked to rate your confidence in your response.

🛡️Important:

  • Everything you type is recorded as part of the study.
  • The study is fully anonymous, but please do not include any personal or sensitive information (e.g., your name, address, or passwords).
  • This is not a performance test — no score will be shown at the end.
  • Your payment is not based on accuracy, but on completing the task honestly and attentively.

⛔️ Do not use the browser's "Back" button or reload the page — this may erase your progress.

🎯 Ready? Click Start to begin.

Thank you for answering the questions!

To finish, we would like to ask you a few quick questions about your experience.

This short questionnaire will help us better understand your perception of using copilot during the test.

Let's finish!

1. First read the question

What is the planet closest to Earth?

2. Then give your own answer

3. Finally rate your confidence in your own answer
